Team USA arrives into the 16th edition of the biennial tournament as a two-time defending champion, after retaining the trophy with a 16 1/2—11 1/2 win in Des Moines, Iowa, two years ago.

Juli Inkster will again captain the Americans as they look to complete their third three-peat in the tournament’s history, having already done so between 1994 and 1998 and between 2005 and 2009.

Catriona Matthews, meanwhile, will take charge of Team Europe for the first time, becoming the first Briton to captain the European team since Alison Nicholas in 2011.

Both captains can count on a number of world-class golfers, with Lexi Thompson, Nelly Korda and Danielle Kang representing Team USA, while Carlota Ciganda, Charley Hull, and Georgia Hall among the players on Team Europe’s roster.

The Americans’ last Solheim Cup appearance on European soil saw them defeat Team Europe by a single point, winning 14.5 to 13.5 in Germany four years ago.

The women’s equivalent of the Ryder Cup, the tournament now follows the same format of its male counterpart after changing several times over the years.

The first two days feature four foursomes and four four-ball matches, while the final day features 12 single matches. Should the scores be tied at the end of Sunday, Team USA will retain the trophy as its current holder.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of the tournament.

When is the Solheim Cup?

The 16th edition of the tournament runs from Friday, September 13 until Sunday, September 15.

Where is the Solheim Cup?

The 2019 installment of the tournament takes place at the Gleneagles PGA Centenary Course in Perth & Kinross, Scotland.

Gleneagles also becomes the first British venue to host the tournament since it was staged at Loch Lomond Golf Course in Scotland in 2000.

The 73-par course was designed by 18-time major winner Jack Nicklaus and stretches over 7,320 yards. It hosted the Ryder Cup in 2014, which Team Europe won 16.5 to 11.5.
