It’s very likely that this concept was designed after developers discovered Soap shoes while on a trip to San Francisco (for game inspiration) as the products were being launched around the same time that Sonic Adventure 2 was in development.
This actually led to a sponsorship of sorts by Soap shoes, as the iconic footwear was added to Sonic Adventure 2, and a stylized version was given to the Hedgehog himself in-game. During this time, Soap shoes were being sold by a newly created company called Artemis Innovations. Unfortunately, over the years, due to some legal issues and bankruptcies, the brand would fade into relative obscurity. Today, it is considered a subsidiary of the popular Heelys company.
