Released in Q4 2016, the original PS VR disappointed many PS4 owners since it couldn’t be used without additional adapters and controllers.

Now it’s time for Sony to compete with popular alternatives like the Oculus Quest 2 and Valve Index.

The PS VR2’s New Design

Hideaki Nishino revealed in a post on the PlayStation Blog that the new VR headset was inspired by the PS5 and aims to immerse players into a VR environment with ergonomics in mind:

The latest design features a lens adjustment dial, which has been developed to allow players to match the lens distance between their eyes. This means that users with glasses won’t feel uncomfortable, allowing the lens to be further away, without interrupting gameplay.

In addition, Sony’s new vent design lessens the chance of the headset fogging up, so users can feel fully immersed in the PS VR2.

Despite additional technology and performance enhancements, the PS VR2 comes with a slight weight reduction, boasting a slimmer design that’s more akin to the PS5’s aesthetics.

PS VR2 Visual Improvements

While the PS VR could be used on the PS5, it didn’t really make the most out of the next-gen console’s technology.

Although many of the specs remain the same, like the 90/120Hz refresh rate and 110 degrees field of view, the PS VR2 improves upon its predecessor, taking the resolution up to 4K HDR, from 1080p.

Players will be able to connect the PS VR2 to their PS5 with a single USB-C cable to enjoy the new VR2 Sense Technology, enhanced tracking, and get their hands on Sony’s PS VR2 Sense controller.

In light of the announcement, PS5 owners will be eagerly awaiting more compatible PS VR games to marvel at the promised immersive experience.

The PlayStation VR2 Can Now Compete

The new features will undoubtedly negate the drawbacks the PS VR incurred due to being tied down by the PS4’s restrictions.

Almost 18 months after the release of the PS5, Sony finally has something worthwhile to offer in the world of VR; perhaps a more affordable and competitive alternative to what’s currently out there.
