Speaking to Time magazine, Sony sales chief Jim Ryan said the following regarding the PlayStation 4 Pro hardware:
Ryan insinuates that sales of PlayStation 4 Pro would be even more impressive if Sony had more stock on shelves. He’s also noted that Sony has increased production of the hardware to better meet demand.
With the Electronic Entertainment Expo starting next week, key Sony executives appear to have done several interviews with non-gaming major media outlets. While the focus was largely regarding the success of Sony’s late 2016 hardware releases, including the PlayStation 4 Pro, the PS VR, and the cheaper, slimmer PlayStation 4, other topics were broached. That includes Jim Ryan’s odd comments asking why anyone would play games via backwards compatibility.
Sony also lightly addressed the upcoming reveal and release of Microsoft’s new Xbox hardware, Project Scorpio. Scorpio is designed to be a more powerful counterpart to the Xbox One, similar to what Sony’s done with the PlayStation 4 Pro, except with more powerful hardware. Ryan shoots straight, saying Sony’s not, “frightened of what they do.” He cites Sony’s library of games as what ultimately matters, believing the PlayStation 4 library well makes up for the hardware difference between PS4 Pro and Xbox Scorpio.
Some have speculated that Sony may already be working on a PlayStation 5 console, an announcement that could very well steal the wind from Microsoft’s sales this E3. That could also explain the odd comments regarding backwards compatibility by Jim Ryan. However, CEO and President of Sony Interactive Entertainment Shawn Layden made clear where the company’s priorities lie:
Sony will deliver its annual PlayStation E3 keynote on Monday, June 12 at 6:00pm PT. The PlayStation 4, PlayStation 4 Pro, and PS VR are all currently available at retailers across the world.
